What are some martial arts topics that Sidekicks students learn about? Well, I recently sat in on a week of Taekwondo classes at San Diego Sidekicks Martial Arts Academy and these are some of the topics that students were learning about from their teacher, Grandmaster Orange.
The five weapons in a kick. What they are and how to use them.
What is the common peroneal nerve, and why it’s important in martial arts.
Review and understanding of kicking with different parts of the foot.
Sparring techniques practice and use, including the importance of keeping your hands up when sparring.
Why it’s important to do your forms correctly and with discipline, as opposed to doing the forms sloppily. And why you need to do the forms correctly yourself, not for Grandmaster Orange.
That it’s important to honor your parents and respect your teachers.
Kids practiced thanking their parents.
Learned how to extend their arm to reach longer.
Academic excellence and celebrating the students who achieved academic excellence. Practiced being supportive to their peers.
Learned and practiced board breaking. With a parent even getting a chance at it.
All throughout the classes, parents, grandparents and siblings were present watching, interacting and learning, too. Parents were called upon to put their phones down and get involved. Sidekicks is truly a community where everyone matters.
